David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation

Updated on July 28, 2014

Focusing On Saving African And Asian Wildlife

In 2009 the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation marked it's 25th anniversary.

In 1984 The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) was set up to focus David's conservation efforts and to increase public awareness and funds for wildlife conservation all over the world especially Africa and Asia.

  • We seek to save a planet, a world of life. Reconciling the needs of human beings and the needs of others that share the Earth.
  • We seek to practice conservation that is humane in the broadest sense.
  • We seek to instill in people everywhere a discriminating, yet unabashed, reverence for nature and to balance that reverence with a profound belief in human possibilities.
  • From the smallest community to the largest multinational organization, we seek to inspire others who can advance the cause of conservation.
  • We seek to be the voice for those creatures who have no voice. We speak for their future.
  • We seek to apply the wealth of our talents, knowledge, and passion to making the world wealthier in life, in spirit, and in living wonder of nature.

How Did The Foundation Come About?

Helping endangered species around the world

Whilst in Africa David Shepherd found a waterhole poisoned by poachers, around which were lying 255 dead Zebra. He realised then that, through his paintings, which were already in great demand, he could repay his debt to the wildlife that was immediately bringing him such success.

Since then, with the help of supporters across the world, the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) has given away over £3 million in grants to save critically endangered mammals in their wild habitat and benefit the local people who share their environment.

DSWF is an adaptable and flexible, non-bureaucratic organisation responding promptly to conservation threats by supporting trusted, reputable individuals and organisations operating the field. Lean on administration but generous on funding, DSWF supports a range of innovative, vital and far-reaching projects throughout Africa and Asia, achieving real results for wildlife survival.

Foundations Recent Achievements

Deal with the poachers and educate the locals

  • Training and equipping every forest officer in India's famous Sunderbans Tiger Reserve.
  • Uncovering ivory cartels in Zambia, seizing thousands of pounds worth of ivory and arresting poachers.
  • Reducing poaching in Russia, allowing Siberian Tigers to increase from 100 to over 400 in the wild.
  • Purchasing land next to one of South Africa's National Parks, home to the last 800 surviving mountain zebra, extending the park by over 200%...
  • Active Conservation Awareness Programme has reached over 40 million homes across Asia and with the support of film idol Jackie Chan has persuaded many to stop consuming wildlife.

  • Funding undercover operations of Africa's first cross-border Task Force fighting wildlife smuggling.

One of his first major fund-raising successes was with the painting 'Tiger Fire' which raised 127,000 for Project Tiger in 1973. To date, through David's efforts and the generosity of the Foundation's supporters, over 2.5 million has been raised.

Effective and Popular Wildlife Charity

Funding long term projects

The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) has been voted one of the most effective and popular wildlife charities in Britain. We are a flexible, non bureaucratic organisation, actively responding to wildlife crises. Working with experts, we fund innovative, long-term projects in Africa and Asia.

Our work is achieving real results for species survival in their wild habitat whilst truly benefiting local communities who share their environment. The awareness we raise through our engaging education programme and the funds we generate through 'Art for Survival' are also key aspects of our work. We guarantee that 100% of donations marked for a specific cause go in full to that project.

Tomorrow Will Be Too Late ...

Our troubled world, we need action NOW!

"Today, one species becomes extinct every hour.

MAN has slaughtered 98% of the world's black rhinos.

More than half of Africa's elephants and three sub-species of tigers have disappeared forever.

With just 0.5% of the £7 billion donated annually to UK based charities going to animal causes, and even less to core conservation projects

...we need your support TODAY

...tomorrow will be too late"

David Shepherd

"Man has contributed so much to the destruction of wildlife habitats and the wholesale slaughter of some the world's most remarkable wildlife. If we are to ensure the survival of rare and beautiful species we must not relax our efforts for one second. With just 0.5% of the £7 billion donated annually to UK based charities going to animal causes, and even less to core conservation projects, we need your support TODAY... tomorrow will be too late!"

An Artist in Conservation - Published in 1992, a collection of the best of David's wildlife art with over 90 colour plates.

A stunning collection of the best of David's wildlife art, this book is a testimony both to his unique talents as an artist and to the beauty and majesty of the animals he portrays.

There are fascinating descriptions of trips he made to shoot game - not with a gun, but with a camera. The paintings which follow are as full of life and light as the landscapes he paints. Complemented by color sketches, and handwritten notes by the artist himself, they are a celebration of his subjects and his work.
